Bharti Walmart today launched Bharti Walmart Training Centre (BWTC) in Hyderabad in a public private partnership (PPP) with the Andhra Pradesh government in order to create a network of retail-ready work force to bridge the existing skill gap in the retail industry.

Arti Singh, senior vice-president (corporate affairs), Bharti Walmart, said, “The Indian retail sector is growing at an exponential rate, and the recent approval of FDI in multi brand retail will further impetus the growth opportunities. However, the sector lacks skilled manpower and through this BWTC, we aim to bridge the existing gap to an extent."

The centre will offer free training and short-term vocational certification courses to underprivileged youth in the state and equip them with requisite skills sets to bridge the gap in the cash-and-carry and organized retail sector. After they can be employed as floor and sales assistants and supervisors, the company said in a release today.

The training curriculum is based on Walmart’s expertise in retail business and global practices. Bharti Walmart is involved in the training process from curriculum development, training and certification to placement assistance, while Centum Learning will run the centre.

Bharti Walmart has total 12 BWTCs in India including 5 centres across Amritsar, Delhi, Bangalore, Jalna and Aurangabad in public private partnerships with respective state governments, three centres running at Best Price Modern Wholesale stores in Zirakpur, Jalandhar and Ludhiana, and four centres have been set up in partnership with Hope Foundation in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

Bharti Walmart, a joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Walmart for wholesale cash-and-carry and back-end supply chain management operations in India, has trained over 15,000 students from its existing 12 centres.
