Work apace on Mutiara power plant in Tuticorin


TUTICORIN: The Tuticorin region has got great potential for industrial investments and its growing popularity can reach new heights in the coming days, according to Ahmed A. R. Buhari, Founder President and Chief Executive Officer, Coal and Oil Group. Mr. Buhari was speaking here at a conference organised by Coal and Oil Group company Coastal Energen Private Limited, Melamarudhur, Ottapidaram taluk.

With the commencement of the first phase with a capacity of 2 x 600 MW Mutiara thermal power plant, the unit is expected to generate 1,200 MW of electricity with a provision to expand up to 2,400 MW in the next phase. With an outlay of Rs. 5,000 crore, the project is expected to go on stream by 2012.

The plant would supply power to the State electricity board and to the private sector.

An agreement had been signed with Tata Power for supplying 500 MW. Mr. Buhari felt that Tuticorin could attract huge industrial investments of Rs. 25,000 crore. It is pegged to become one of the biggest energy clusters in India. Power projects with a capacity to generate over 6,000 MW will be made operational in Tuticorin in due course, he said.

The power projects in the pipeline are: TNEB-NLC 1,000 MW, Ind Bharath 1,200 MW and TNEB-BHEL 1,600 MW.

With the establishment of the Nanguneri Special Economic Zone and improved connectivity by road, rail and air, Tuticorin can become a major destination for power and an industrial hub.

Referring to the meeting with Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the setting up of this project, he said the Chief Minister had expressed his desire to initiate the developmental project in the southern region of Tamil Nadu for generating employment opportunities and accorded his priority to Tuticorin.

Chalking out a future course of action, he deliberated on the site plan and said that the structural design would be state-of-the-art with all facilities.
